Professional seminar industry 4.0 and IoT: Technologies and Applications
A professional seminar titled ‘Industry 4.0 and IoT : Technologies and Applications’ has been held on 13th December 2017 at Auditorium hall USM Engineering Campus and speakers from various industries and sectors were invited to the seminar. The seminar was open to all IET members and the public. The main objectives of this seminar are to build bridges between academicians, technology providers, manufactures, and students to disseminate latest development in industry 4.0 and IoT in terms of technologies, applications and future career implications.
Industry 4.0 is the vision of the future manufacturing industry and potentially a pathway leading to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the wake of Industry 4.0, Malaysia government is spearheading with its policy to kick start and accelerate industries towards the next level of technology adaption. Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the internet, collecting and sharing data.
The event started with opening remarks from Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad, dean from School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering followed by Mr. Lim Yew Kee, the IET council member. The opening keynotes was delivered by Dr. Hari Narayanan, managing director from Motorola Solutions Malaysia. Dr. Hari shared a lot of example of IoT technologies to audience, e.g. tracking devices equipped by police to find a lost subject in public area. Besides that, Dr. Hari also highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligent (AI) and Edge Analytics in the IoT ecosystem.
The second keynotes was presented by Dr Mohd Aziz Chik from Silterra. Using some case studies in his own company, Dr Aziz had shared to all participants on how the application of IoT enables the manufacturing optimization. After a while, the seminar continued with presentations from Mr. Takahiko Kunimitsu from Keyence and Prof. Rosni Abdullah from NAV6 USM. Both speaker had shared their insights in the innovation of IoT.
After a short break, Mr. Yew Chia Wei from National Instrument and Mr. Choong Lee Shyue from CEEDTec Technology Sdm Bhd. had presented the topic titled IoT in Semiconductor Manufacturing and IoT in Wireless Infrastructure respectively. The closing keynotes was delivered by Mr. Lim Yew Kee, covering the advancement of manufacturing in industrial revolution 4.0.
At the end of the day, we can conclude that the technological drivers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are yet to be consolidated but the foundation should lie on the sensing and connection of everything. Although different focuses on productivity elevation were established by different countries and governments, due to current socio-economical push, the evolution or revolution will most likely involve innovation not only in hardware technologies but also in systems, services and business practices. During the talk, some of the key implications of the innovation and impact beyond manufacturing industry and technologies has been addressed.
